Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
