A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such medications need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
