Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
