The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
