“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
